Australian Climate Diplomacy Research

In recent years,the global climate change caused by human activities has become increasingly serious,which has also drawn the attention of countries all over the world.Under this background,climate diplomacy arose for international cooperation on settling climate change.Climate diplomacy refers to the cooperation between countries when facing climate changes that seriously threaten the normal life of mankind,including negotiation,consultation,and consensus.Climate change not only involves the environment,but also the development.Therefore,the resolution of the climate issue has direct influence on the development of all countries in the world.This thesis aims to makes a systematic review of the development history of Australia's climate diplomacy.By studying Australia's different attitudes towards climate diplomacy in different periods and based on further analysis,it is concluded that the reason why Australia has adopted climate diplomacy is that it requires the cooperation of all countries in the world to curb the continuous deterioration of the climatic environment.In the meantime,the increasing awareness of environmental protection among Australians and the pressure of public opinions at home and abroad have also prompted Australia to embark on the path of climate diplomacy.However,Australia's dependence on traditional energy sources,the opposition of domestic interest groups,and the influence of the United States will impede the smooth progress of climate cooperation.In addition,through an analysis of Australia's performance in international climate cooperation and its views expressed at international climate conferences,some conclusions can be drawn as follows.Australia's climate diplomacy always prioritizes its national economic interests;obvious pragmatism is adopted in the process of its climate cooperation;different attitudes towards climate diplomacy exist when different ruling parties are in power.To sum up,although Australia's vacillating attitude towards climate diplomacy has impeded international climate cooperation to a certain extent and damaged its image in the international community,the country has not given up on exploring ways to be involved in climate diplomacy and get its interests protected in the meantime.This has also promoted the development of its domestic new energy industry covertly.Besides,by studying the merits and demerits of Australia's climate diplomacy,we can learn from its strengths to offset our weaknesses and take precautions,thus providing reference for China's climate diplomacy.
