Place name is one of the symbols of geography. The relationship between place names and natural environment reflects the relationship between people and land.At the same time, place names have rich cultural connotation, which is the direct or indirect embodiment of regional human attributes.Northern Shaanxi is the central part of China's Loess Plateau. It has been a place for strategists to fight for since ancient times, and also a "knot" area for ethnic integration.Through the study of the place name landscape in Northern Shaanxi,we can not only find the naming rules and historical and cultural connotations, but also understand the relationship between the formation of place name landscape and the natural environment and cultural elements. This can provide a reference for inheriting the rich cultural heritage of place names, and naming and protection of place names in the whole country.Based on the 1:10000 basic geographic information database of China, this paper analyzes the temporal and spatial characteristics of town names in Northern Shaanxi by using the methods of literature research, statistical analysis and spatial analysis, combined with the digital elevation data, slope data and aspect data. The results show that:(1)The culture of place names in Northern Shaanxi shows the unique landform and hydrological environment. There are not only common names such as shan,yu,ya,but also yuan, liang, mao to explain mountain characteristics. There are not only common words such as he,hu,but also chuan, jian,qu,quan to refine hydrological elements in place names.(2)The number of place names in Northern Shaanxi is deeply influenced by politics and military.Northern Shaanxi has experienced the disputes of the past dynasties. In different dynasties, the great wall, forts and post stations were built, especially many forts built in the Ming Dynasty have become the names of towns now, which laid the foundation for the development of town names.During the Qing Dynasty, the government encouraged the immigrants from the mainland, which promoted the development of towns in Northern Shaanxi.(3)The culture of place names in Northern Shaanxi is open and diverse.Northern Shaanxi is the transitional zone between the farming civilization in the Central Plains and the nomadic civilization in the northwest. Many ethnic groups have merged here, leaving a large number of ethnic names, many are still in use.Northern Shaanxi is also a place where Shamanism,Buddhism and Taoism are integrated, where folk beliefs are integrated, reflecting the local people's yearning for a better life.(4)There are obvious differences and imbalances in the spatial distribution of place names in Northern Shaanxi. The density of place names in the middle and east of Northern Shaanxi is relatively high, especially in Jiaxian,Suide,Mizhi and Wubu counties. This area is located at a lower elevation, mostly sunny and semi sunny slopes, with a gentle slope, which is conducive to the production and life of residents.Referring to the water system map of Northern Shaanxi, these areas belong to the intersection of the local river and the Yellow River, with abundant water resources.(5)By applying the spatial analysis method of GIS to the research of place names cultural landscape,it can be seen that the combination of quantitative analysis method and GIS technology can give full play to the advantages of spatial display, spatial analysis and precise and rigorous in the research of cultural landscape, which can not only promote the interdisciplinary integration of disciplines, but also promote the application scope of GIS.
