《The Opinions on Further Reducing the Burden of Homework and Off-Campus Training for Students at the Compulsory Education Stage》 released by the state in 2021,has brought the issue of the burden of schoolwork to the attention of the community once again, and it is an issue that needs to be urgently addressed at the current stage of basic education. In this study,a primary school in Lianyungang City,Jiangsu Province, was selected to conduct a case study on the current situation of the burden of homework on students in the middle and upper grades of primary schools.Based on the literature research method, the thesis compares and analyses the existing domestic and international literature on the understanding, measurement, hazards and influencing factors of classwork burden. On this basis, the study compiled a questionnaire on the burden of schoolwork on primary school students in terms of both objective load and subjective feelings.431 students from 10 classes in primary school J in Lianyungang were used as the target population for the questionnaire survey, and some parents and teachers were interviewed.Through the analysis of the survey data and combined with the interview transcripts, the thesis concludes that: although the school workload of primary school students has been reduced, the phenomenon of heavier workload still exists.Objectively, some students do not yet meet the 10-hour sleep requirement;the actual school curriculum and school hours exceed the policy, while there are instances of language, mathematics and English teachers taking over music, physical education and art classes;the amount of homework time for primary school students has decreased, but there is a single type of homework, and some parents assign extra homework for students to improve their performance;the number of general school examinations has decreased, but class-based In terms of teaching and learning materials, nearly half of the students’ teaching and learning materials do not meet the national requirement of one subject for one aid.In terms of subjective factors, there are individual differences in students’ feelings of stress, with parents and teachers being the main sources of stress for students. In terms of motivation, most students are interested in learning, but there are also some who value external rewards and appreciation more than others. In terms of academic emotions, pride and happiness are positively associated with academic performance, while anxiety and irritation are negatively associated with academic performance. The author analyses the causes from three aspects: on the government side,it is mainly due to the lack of supervision by the relevant departments, which leads to deviations in policy implementation and the uneven distribution of educational resources due to regional development differences;on the school level,it is due to the single evaluation standard of schools, the lack of teachers’ own quality and the imbalance of the school curriculum structure. At the family level, this is mainly due to parents’ high expectations of their children’s academic performance and the lack of proper parenting methods.Based on the findings, the thesis proposes countermeasures to reduce the school workload of primary school students: the government needs to strengthen the supervision and monitoring of policy implementation and provide high-quality and balanced educational resources for the public. At the school level, there is a need to change the single-minded approach to education evaluation,to improve the quality of teachers and to ensure a balanced development of the curriculum.Families need to change their attitudes towards education and acquire scientific methods of education.
