A Study On The Relationship Among Middle School Students’ Self-esteem,self-concept And Social Anxiety

As an important research topic in the field of psychology and related disciplines,social anxiety among secondary school students has received increasing attention from all walks of life.Secondary school students have just entered adolescence and are not yet mentally mature enough to ensure that they can correctly understand themselves and interact well with the outside world in the process of socialization,which requires timely and effective guidance from educators.In this study,we attempted to explore the effects of self-esteem,self-concept,and social anxiety on secondary school students,and to provide counseling for the physical and psychological stability of secondary school students,as well as to help prevent and alleviate their social anxiety,and to help them acquire interpersonal skills and enrich their interpersonal networks.Methods: The Self-Esteem Scale(SES),Self-Concept Scale(TSCS),and Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents(SAS-A)were used to measure 409 secondary school students in three middle schools in Hanzhong and Baoji cities,and the data were correlated using SPSS25.0.The results revealed that:(1)Secondary school students’ self-concept scores were significantly higher for boys than for girls in most dimensions;junior high school students had a significantly better selfconcept than high school students;urban students had a significantly higher self-concept than rural students;and those with higher academic levels had a significantly higher self-concept than those with moderate or lower academic levels.(2)In the dimension of "fear of negative evaluation",the anxiety level of secondary school students was significantly higher for girls than for boys;the social anxiety level of sophomore students was significantly higher than that of junior high school students,while the social anxiety level of senior high school students was significantly higher than that of junior high school students.(3)The self-esteem level of secondary school students was significantly higher for boys than for girls;those with higher academic level were significantly higher than those with middle and lower academic level.(4)There was a significant negative correlation between the positive dimension of selfconcept and social anxiety among secondary school students;while the negative dimension of self-criticism showed a dense positive correlation with social anxiety.(5)Secondary school students showed a significant positive correlation between their selfesteem level and the positive dimension of self-concept;and a significant negative correlation with its negative dimension.(6)Secondary school students’ self-esteem levels and social anxiety were negatively correlated.Adversity(7)The level of self-esteem of secondary school students can influence social anxiety through the mediating effect of self-concept.Based on the findings of the data analysis,the following countermeasures were proposed from the perspective of school education.(1)Pay attention to the development of students’ self-awareness and strengthen the cultivation of self-awareness and self-esteem(2)Strengthen mental health education and emphasize comprehensive psychological counseling(3)Guide students to deal with interpersonal socialization in a relaxed manner and overcome anxiety...
