| Spillover hypothesis(Engfer,1988)points out that with a satisfactory and supportive marriage, parents are more likely to respond sensitively to their children’s needs;on the contrary, hostile or conflicting marriage will lead to less parental involvement and emotional availability. However, some studies have proved the compensatory hypothesis and compartmentalization hypothesis.Personality trait may help explain this difference.Sensory processing sensitivity(SPS)is a personality trait, which represents the sensitivity to environment. The highly sensitive individuals are sensitive to the negative environment, but also more likely to benefit from the positive environment. Therefore, this study will explore how sensory processing sensitivity affects the relationship between marriage and parenting behavior. In addition, most researchers ignore the exploration of the positive aspects of marriage. However, the existence of negative factors of marriage does not mean the lack of positive factors and the lack of negative factors of marriage cannot guarantee the existence of positive factors. Therefore,in order to build a complete family environment system, the study will consider both the positive and negative aspects of marriage effect on parenting behavior. In order to capture the daily fluctuations and time for a changes, this study combined diary research and longitudinal research to explore the influence between marriage and parenting behavior and the moderating effects of sensory processing sensitivity(SPS).In Study 1,a diary study was used to collect daily partner support, marital conflict, positive parenting behavior and negative parenting behavior.Finally,1712 data onto127 people were collected. In Study 1,dynamic structural equation modeling(DSEM)was used to analyze the diary date. The results showed that:(1)In daily interaction, partner support predicted the positive parenting behavior in the same day.Similarly, marital conflict can also predict the negative parenting behavior in the same day.But there was no relationship between partner support and negative parenting behavior and between marital conflict and positive parenting behavior.(2)The study did not find the time-lagged effect of marital to parenting behavior, that is,the marriage could not significantly predict parenting behavior on the next day.(3)Parental sensory processing sensitivity(SPS)could significantly moderate the influence of marriage to parenting behavior: for the parents high in Ease of Excitation(EOE),the marital conflict could significantly predict the negative parenting behavior. However, this relationship was not significant low in EOE.Parents low in Aesthetic Sensitivity(AES),marital conflict can significantly predict negative parenting behavior. However,it was not significant high in AES.Low Sensory Threshold(LST)cannot moderate the influence of marriage to parenting behavior. In Study 2,we collected the data onto marital conflict, partner support, positive parenting behavior and negative parenting behavior.A total of 124 participants were collected in time1 and 78 participants in tim2.A total of 71 effective participants were collected in study 2.The structural equation modeling(SEM)was used to analyze longitudinal studies. The results showed that:(1)Partner support significantly positively predicted positive parenting behavior at T1 and T2.(2)In time 1,partner support significantly negatively predicted negative parenting behavior, but in time 2,this relationship did not exist. In addition, marital conflict significantly positively predicted negative parenting behavior in T1 and T2.(3)Parental sensory processing sensitivity(SPS)could significantly moderate the influence of marriage to parenting behavior: compared with parents scoring high on AES,low AES parents had stronger relationship between partner conflict and positive parenting in T2;compared with parents high in LST,parents with in low LST had more positive parenting behavior after receiving partner’s support in T2.The Ease of Excitation(EOE)could not moderate the influence of marriage to parenting behavior. The results supported the spillover hypothesis and proved that the emotion and behavior generated in the process of marriage would affect their parenting behavior, but the spillover effects to exist on for a very short time. Finally, the sensory processing sensitivity(SPS)plays a risk role in the marriage on parenting behavior: highly sensitive individuals are more sensitive to negative environment, which supported the Diathesis Stress. |
