Abstract/Summary:
Primary education is the foundation of national education and the key stage of the cultivation of students’ comprehensive quality.Primary education in Australia, adhering to the western education model,is of high quality and can be used for reference.Through sorting out a large number of direct or indirect empirical data, the research initially finds that Australian primary education is characterized by attaching importance to "whole person education" and "advocating pluralism".Therefore, this study conducted a case study of Granville Public School in Sydney,Australia,to explore the concept and practice of "multi-whole-person education" in Australian primary schools, and to provide enlightenment for the high-quality development of primary education in China on this basis. As an ordinary Australian public primary school,Granville Public School is a good model. In the data collection of this case study,we can collect :(1)Newsletters of the case school from 2010 to 2020;(2)Electronic photographs taken in the field from primary education in Australia,in particular from the case school participants;(3)Australian primary school curriculum syllabus parents guide and other empirical materials and literature.Based on the need of "triangulation" methodology,10 interviewees that have primary school education experience in Australia participated in-depth interviews. The participants included students, parents and educational researchers, and some of them had dual identities of parents and educational researchers. The credibility of the study is enhanced by using interview corpus as supporting material.Through the in-depth analysis of the above research materials,it can be confirmed that primary education in Australia is characterized by "multi-whole-person education",which can be summarized as: "Respect students’ differences and cultivate a complete person".The practice of the concept of multi-whole-person education in the case school is mainly carried out from four aspects: character education, curriculum, teaching and student evaluation.(1)To cultivate students’ sound personality through immersive school environment, targeted project courses, layered thematic activities and other ways;(2)To integrate curriculum according to the eight key learning areas, seven general capabilities, and three cross-curriculum priorities in the framework of the national unified curriculum, with one syllabus and multiple books and no dissevering the growth of children,so as to cultivate a complete person;(3)To provide the enabling basis for differentiated teaching, such as reasonable class size, classroom layout and teacher-student interaction, and realize individualized teaching to meet students’ diverse educational needs through pleasant classroom interaction and various activities, flexible grouping, stratified teaching and personalized homework arrangement;(4)To evaluate students’ character, academic achievements, sports, arts, public welfare, etc.in multiple dimensions without ranking students.and at the end of the semester, the students are evaluated qualitatively in the form of "grade plus comment" style of written reports and interview,so as to promote students’ diversified and all-round development.Based on the discussion of the above research results,it can be concluded that:Australian primary schools implement multi-whole-person education and attach importance to character education to cultivate students’ healthy personality;Pay attention to curriculum integration to promote students’ all-round development;Practice differentiated teaching to meet students’ diverse needs;Implement multiple evaluation to help students grow sustainably. From the idea and practice of multi-whole-person education in primary schools in Australia,China’s primary education can get some that :(1)To cultivate students’ character by multiple approaches;(2)To promote complete growth of students by integrating curriculum knowledge;(3)To respect individual differences and give full play to students’ potentials;(4)To implement developmental student evaluation on multiple values basis.
