PurposesTo explore the effects of moderate-intensity acute aerobic exercise intervention on cognitive executive function inhibition ability of college students who play video games for different duration,and compares the changes of cognitive executive function inhibition ability of subjects before and after exercise,and explores the effects of acute aerobic exercise on cognitive executive function inhibition ability after a long time of video games.MethodsThis study included 22 sedentary 17-to 29-year-old college students who were physically insufficiently active and video game enthusiasts(female: 11;male: 11;Mean age: 20.6±2.4 years old;BMI: 21.2 + /-3.5 kg/m2;Weight: 63.4±15.1kg;Maximum oxygen uptake :42.2 ± 7.2 m L /kg/min).In this study,subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the 1h gaming group and the 2h gaming group.After completed baseline characteristics test subjects were respectively for 1 h and 2 h,electronic games,video games to immediately after completion of the cognitive function inhibition test(Stroop colour experimental measurement of inhibitory control ability,Go-No-Go test measurement response inhibition ability),cognitive function inhibition test immediately after the 30 min60% VO2 max of moderate intensity exercise(exercise before 3 min30% VO2 max warm-up,exercise after 3 min 30% VO2 max relaxation),The same cognitive test was repeated immediately after the exercise.At the end of the experiment,the accuracy(ACC),reaction time(RT)and velocity-accuracy Performance Index were measured.Heart rate and energy expenditure were monitored during the game and exercise sessions.Methods Covariance analysis was used to examine the differences of cognitive executive function inhibition ability after acute aerobic exercise.Pearson correlation was used to analyze whether there was a correlation between the increased heart rate during the game and the changes of cognitive executive function inhibition ability after acute aerobic exercise,and the correlation analysis of the coefficient of variation between the increased heart rate during the game and the changes of cognitive executive function inhibition ability was conducted.SPSS 25.0 was used as statistical software,and P < 0.05 was statistically significant.ResultsAfter baseline cognitive inhibition tests of executive function and age(1)model,energy consumption(model 2)confounding factors adjusted,found 2 h after exercise intervention group had a significantly higher Stroop test of ACC 1 h group(p = 0.025,p = 0.014,p2 = 0.018),and then this basis,the adjusting for gender factors(model 3)found that have the same results(p3 = 0.022).There was no significant difference in other cognitive executive function inhibition indexes between the two groups(P BBB0 0.05).From different gender,after baseline cognitive inhibition tests of executive function and age(1)model,the movement of energy consumption(model 2)confounding factors adjusted,found that male 2 h after exercise intervention group the Stroop test of ACC is significantly higher than 1 group(p = 0.002,p = 0.004,p2 =0.007),while female 2 h group and 1 h group cognitive inhibition index between executive function had no significant difference(p > 0.05);The results of Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was no significant correlation between heart rate increase rate and the change of cognitive inhibition ability index during the game(P > 0.05).Correlation analysis of inter-group coefficient of variation showed that the variability of the Performance Index in GO-no-GO test and the variability of heart rate increase showed a correlation trend between the two groups(P =0.060).ConclusionThis study found that video games for a long time after acute moderate intensity treadmill exercise can effectively improve the sedentary healthy college students cognitive executive function inhibition of video game enthusiasts inhibitory control,and has the gender differences in improving the extent,but inhibit the reaction of cognitive inhibition executive function had no significant influence.This suggests that moderate-intensity platform running is an effective way to combat cognitive fatigue after a long period of playing video games.
