| Objective There were approximately 61 million left-behind children in China,and great attention from the whole society should be paid to psychosomatic health status of them.In this present study,we aim to investigate the effects of left-behind experience on psychological status of student from certain college in Beijing.In order to make deep understanding the underlying mechanism of the association of left-behind experience and psychological status,we explore the moderate effects of personality traits on relationship between left-behind experience and psychological status,and also explore the mediate effect of defense styles on the relationship between left-behind experience and psychological status.We hope that our results can provide data support to ensure psychological health of college students.Method This cross-sectional study was conducted in January 2018 at a certain college in Beijing,freshman college students were invited to participate in our survey voluntarily.We assessed the psychological status by using of Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90),explored the personality traits by used of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ),and investigated the defense styles by used of Defense Style Questionnaire(DSQ).The difference of total SCL-90 scores between students with left-behind experience and without left-behind experience by using of independent samples t test,and difference of the positive proportion in SCL-90 between students with left-behind experience and without left-behind experience by using of χ2 tests.Moreover,we used Mplus 8 software to explore the moderate effects of personality traits on relationship between left-behind experience and psychological status,and also explore the mediate effect of defense styles on the relationship between left-behind experience and psychological status.Except from moderate and mediate effect,all the data analyses were conducted on SPSS 20.0 software.All tests were two-sided,with P value less than 0.05 was considered significant.Results 376 college students were included in final analysis,with 213 males and 155 females.The mean age was 18.6±0.77 years old,and 90 participants have left-behind experience.The average scores among all the participants were 144.53±53.19,and the overall prevalence of various psychological symptoms(SCL-90≥2)was 52.9%.The average scores of SCL-90 among students(155.86±60.40)with left-behind experience was higher than those without left-behind experience(40.96±50.2,P=0.020).Multivariable logistic regression model analysis found that left-behind experience was associated with higher risk for symptoms of obsessive-compulsiveness(OR=2.12,95%CI:1.31-3.45,P=0.002),interpersonal sensitivity(OR=2.36,95%CI:1.45-3.84,P=0.001),paranoid ideation(OR=2.73,95%CI:1.62-4.60,P<0.001),psychoticism(OR=3.06,95%CI:1.76-5.32,P<0.001),and other problems(OR=1.78,95%CI:1.01-3.15,P=0.046).In addition,we also found that personality traits did not have moderating effects on the association between left-behind experience and psychological problems,and immature and neurotic defense styles may act,in part,as mediators between the left-behind experience and psychological problems.Conclusion The psychological problems among college students were pervasive,especially for those with left-behind experience.Personality traits did not have moderating effects on the association between left-behind experience and psychological problems,and immature and neurotic defense styles may act,in part,as mediators between the left-behind experience and psychological problems.Changing defense styles with effective interventions may be useful to improve the psychological status of college students with left-behind experience. |
