A counselor is not only the organizer,implementer,and director of the ideological and political education and management for college students,but also the backbone of education in ideology and politics of college students.A counselor takes heavy responsibility of guiding students to grow healthily,and serves as the backbone of maintaining campus stability.The quality of students has a significant relationship with the occupational competency of counselors.Because the comprehensive quality of students in private universities is lower than those in public universities,there is higher requirements for counselor occupational competency in private universities.As a famous private university in Shaanxi province,S college always emphasizes the work of counselors.S college takes measures in six aspects to improve counselor competency:develops training courses,organizes and implements competition activities,encourages counselors to walk onto the podium,carries out pre-employment training,sets up counselor workshop,and holds counselor quality and ability contest.However,based on the results of questionnaire survey,the S college counselor competency still has limitations.There are two main problems of S college counselor competency:on the one hand,counselors are not very passionate and loyal to their positions,because their work is detailed and complicated,their responsibility is not clear,and their payment is not proportional to the benefit.On the other hand,some counselors lack occupational competency because their professional knowledge is limited.After conducting in-depth interviews with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs,Director of Student Affairs,and some in-service counselors,we found the management mode of counselor team and performance assessment mechanism are not scientific,the overall quality of counselors is on the low side,and the team degree of specialization is not high,which leads to the limited counselor occupational competency.After detailed analyses,we concluded there are three factors(government,college,and counselor)that limit the improvement of counselor occupational competency:the related policies are not very supportive,the degree of recognition to counselor positions of society is low,the college doesn’t attach enough importance to counselor work and doesn’t carry out scientific management methods,inter-departmental cooperation is not efficient and the position recognition,work competence,and work attitude are not sufficient.Finally,we suggest some corresponding measures in three aspects:The government should issue laws and regulations such as the regulations on the protection of private education workerscollege and counselors themselves.The government should enact related regulations about counselor qualification recognition,set up a specialized subject in counseling in some universities,and improve the social recognition of counselor positions in private universities,to promote the development of private universities and support the improvement of private university counselor occupational competency.S college should make a change of concept,clarify and refine the job responsibilities of counselors,set up a theoretical learning platform for counselors,strengthen the professional training of counselors based on practice,enhance the skill training of counselors in the daily work,make a clear career plan for counselors,establish a scientific and reasonable system in performance appraisal and training for counselors,enhance multi-sector cooperation and multi-aspect support,enhance the encouragement for counselors,and attach great importance to on the improvement of counselor occupational competency.Counselors should love their own work,serve their students,actively study the theoretical knowledge about their positions,establish the mind of continuous learning,and improve their occupational competency more consciously.
