With China’s rapid entry into an aging society, the issue of old-age care has drawn the attention of all sectors of society.Dementia is a common disease in the elderly, and the gap in nursing talents associated with it is severe. In China, institutional pension is still an indispensable way of providing for the elderly. Many family members choose to send the demented elderly to the nursing home and hire the care workers as the main caregiver. However, the care workers working in nursing homes are in a relatively closed residential environment, the working environment and the living environment are integrated, facing the intensity of work, the long time of accompanying the demented elderly, and the lack of professional support for the elderly who care for the dementia. The care dilemma is followed by numerous stress problems. At present, the involvement of social work services in China in the pressure of nursing home care workers is still in the exploratory stage. It is necessary to further analyze the pressure dynamic process of nursing home care workers to take care of the demented elderly, and reflect on the existing professional services. This study takes Lazarus’ s Stress-Response theory as the research perspective, selects qualitative research methods, and takes 13 nursing workers who care for the elderly with mental health in a nursing home in DG as the research object, and collects materials by means of participatory observation and semi-structured interviews.Depthly describe the stress perception and coping process of the care workers in the nursing home to take care of the demented elderly. The research questions include:(a)How do the nursing home care workers in the process of caring for the mentally handicapped elderly work together with the relevant external scenarios to generate a source of stress? What are the specific sourcesof stress?(b)What kind of stress coping strategies do nursing home care workers usually take in the process of caring for the elderly?(c)What is the situation of the nursing staff in nursing homes taking care of the stress-adapted consequences of the demented elderly? The study found that:(a)There are three major sources of stress for the elderly in demented homes, namely, the daily life of the caregiver, the interaction between the caregiver and the family members of the demented elderly, and the management of the nursing home.(b)In order to cope with the pressure of caring for the elderly with dementia, the coping strategies adopted by the carers are divided into emotional remission strategies and problem-solving strategies.Among them, emotional strategies include cognitive strategies and behavioral strategies, while problem-solving strategies include patient persuasion. The help of the demented elderly, the help of the same workers, and the help of the families of the demented old people reflect that the protective tools have a subjective initiative to cope with the pressure, and it is a highlight that deserves to be deeply explored and intervened by social service providers.(c)The performance of the nursing staff in the face of stress is manifested in three aspects: physical health, mental health and work adaptation, and the overall trend is negative. Finally, according to the research conclusions, the author reflects on the existing social work services, and believes that the social work service of the nursing home should pay attention to the pressure of the care workers to take care of the demented old people. The content of the intervention should shift from a single to a comprehensive and systematic service thinking.Further strengthen professional services in the micro, meso and macro aspects, and play a variety of roles such as coordinators, resource linkers, and advocates to further refine the content of social work services. |
