A Study On The Use And Cognition Of Internet Catchwords Among International Students In China And Their Influence

Internet catchwords have fully penetrated into daily life,and some of them have gradually developed into common social language.The Internet catchwords that emerge in large numbers each year are the fastest spreading and highly used among university students.International students are more likely to be exposed to Internet catchwords in the same social environment,and this is a way for international students to learn.This study adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods,using questionnaires to investigate the use and cognition of Internet catchwords among 94 international students coming to China,and further conducting in-depth interviews with eight international students coming to China,on the basis of which the impact of Internet catchwords on international students coming to China in terms of both Chinese language learning and social integration is also further clarified.The study shows that international students’ overall use of Chinese Internet catchwords in the past five years is relatively good.In terms of time,international students’ mastery of the latest part of Internet catchwords is the worst,while the mastery of other years’ catchwords is not significantly related to the time of their appearance.In terms of type,international students have a good grasp of old words with new meanings,harmonic words and stable Internet catchwords.International students’ use of Internet catchwords is influenced by internal and external factors,such as their personal Chinese language level and the length of time they have studied Chinese,and external factors such as the social environment and the influence of others.International students have a more comprehensive understanding of Internet catchwords,with both positive and negative evaluations of Internet catchwords,mainly positive evaluations.Internet catchwords can increase international students’ interest in learning Chinese,and through Internet catchwords international students can better understand social popular culture,integrate into the target group,promote social interaction,and thus integrate into China.From the findings of this paper,it can be seen that international students’ mastery of certain catchwords can be of practical help to their study life in China,but there are also some problems that arise when international students use Internet catchwords at present.Therefore,international students themselves need to adopt appropriate learning strategies and actively adjust their mindset to overcome the disadvantages.Teachers also need to actively guide international students and help them make good use of Internet catchwords.
