A Report On E-C Translation Of The Discursive Power Of Memes In Digital Culture(Excerpts)under The Guidance Of Cohesion And Coherence

Cohesion and coherence are the internal rules of languages and the focuses of current textual linguistics and discourse analysis.As paramount features of a text,there must be some problems related to cohesion and coherence in the process of translating two languages.According to Halliday and Hasan,cohesive devices are divided into reference,substitution,ellipsis,conjunction and lexical cohesion,and the latter is further divided into reiteration and collocation.The theory puts great emphasis on the equivalence of cohesion and coherence between source text and target text,whereby avoiding mechanical translation,which is in conformity with the primary principle of academic texts,namely,accurately conveying the information of original texts with a clear logical context.Therefore,the thesis,excerpted from an academic text,The Discursive Power of Memes in Digital Culture: Ideology,Semiotics,and Intertextuality as the ST of the translation practice,guided by cohesion and coherence theory,explores the five cohesive devices,their specific applications in translating academic texts and also their guiding roles.Accordingly,such research methods as literature study,caseby-case study approach and qualitative analysis are employed in the process of the study.First,by means of literature study,the translator does a systematic and structural literature review on cohesion and coherence theory,and its applicable text types,whereby analyzing its feasibility to the guidance of the ST.Subsequently,with the aid of case-by-case study,the translator sorts out and analyzes some typical sentences from both the ST and TT to explore the guidance of the theory by employing some specific translation methods.Finally,the translator concludes the major findings,limitations and suggestions for further research from the translation practice via qualitative analysis method.It is proved that the theory of cohesion and coherence can effectively enhance the accuracy and readability of the TT in E-C translation of academic texts.Under the guidance of the theory,the translator can have better comprehension of the ST,can have less misunderstandings and mistranslations of the ST and less translationese in the TT,thus conveying the information of the ST more exactly and faithfully,which is in line with the attributes of academic texts.Therefore,it is of paramount significance to apply cohesion and coherence theory in specific translation practice.
