| With the development of economy, science and technology,people-to-people and cultural exchanges between countries are increasing. There are also an increasing number of language scholars beginning their studies of translation in recent years. And skopos theory,as one of the mainstream translation theories,is of essential significance to translation studies and related practical application. The definition as well as the strategies of translation have been developed since the emergence of skopos theory and the skopos rule, coherence rule, and fidelity rule that skopos theory advocates offer translators a new standard of translation. For one thing,it emphasizes translators’ subjectivity. For another thing,it leads to more practical application of translation, providing translation scholars a new perspective to study. Therefore, the translator chose skopos theory as the theoretical guidance on her translation practice, hoping to expand the application of skopos theory in translation practice.Under the guidance of skopos theory, the translator translated the excerpt selected from Ashley C.Ford’s memoir Somebody’s Daughter published recently.Somebody’s Daughter recalls the author’s growth and embodies the importance of caring for children and family education by presenting the author’s relationship with her parents and family.Belonging to the memoir style, the book contains a lot of colloquial expressions and words with English features. And in terms of that English tends to be static, there are many noun clauses in the source text. Therefore, this report analyzes the translation of noun clauses in the book under the guidance of skopos theory, and summarizes corresponding translation techniques with typical examples from the perspective of the three basic rules of skopos theory, such as amplification and division.Through the analysis of this practice, the translator finds that some corresponding translation techniques can be adopted to improve the translation based on the skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule due to the different characteristics of English noun clauses and Chinese language. In this way,the translator’s translation objectives can be achieved.Through this practice report, the translator hopes to study how to apply skopos theory to the translation of noun clauses further, explore relevant translation techniques, and expand the application of skopos theory to the translation of noun clauses,so as to improve the translation better. In addition, the translator hopes that more Chinese people can realize the importance of family care to the growth of their children through the translation of Ford’s memoir Somebody’s Daughter. |
