The Translation Strategies Of Complexed Passive Sentence And Noun Clause In The Chemical Science Text:A Report On The Translation Of The Chemistry And Technology Of Petroleum(Chapter Nine)

The text that the translator has chosen is The Chemistry and Technology of Petroleum(Chapter Nine),which not only describes mining history and composition of petroleum,but also its extraction process and research methods.It is quite challenging to translate the petroleum scientific text as there are a large number of terminologies that the translator is not familiar with and structurally complex sentences.However,as there are few research papers related to the solutions to these problems,this report will be of practical significance.During the translation process,the main difficulties that the translator has met can be summarized into the following two aspects: passive sentences with attribute and adverbial clauses;noun clauses,including subject clauses,appositive clauses and predicative clauses.For the first problem,based on the structure of sentence,the passive sentences are translated into active sentences,declarative sentences,sentence lacking in a subject and Chinese passive sentences.For the second one,according to different situations,the translator has flexibly adopted different methods,such as conversion,linear translation,and hysteron proteron.By translating the text and writing the report,the translator has gained an understanding of the linguistic features of the text and summarized the report according to the translation theories and techniques acquired.It is hoped that this report may be a source of reference for other translators in petroleum scientific translation.
