A Report On The Translation Of Parentheses Of The Invisible Rules Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

The text of this translation practice selected by the author is from chapter 9 of the book The Invisible Rules,published in 2021 by Canadian writers Paul Harrietha and Holly Catalfamo.This book aims to explore gender equality from the perspective of senior female managers in a context of corporate Canada,so that the target readers,especially professionals,can better understand and benefit from the content.A large number of parentheses are used in the selected texts,which are interspersed in the sentences that should be coherent,resulting in scattered sentence elements and unclear meaning,causing a lot of confusion for translators and readers.Therefore,how to translate these parentheses reasonably and smoothly is a major difficulty in the translation practice.The author intends to use Skopos theory as theoretical support to guide this practice report,following the three principles of Skopos theory,namely,the principle of purpose,the principle of coherence and the principle of loyalty.Based on Skopos theory,the author discusses how to express the original English parentheses fluently in Chinese translation.The author first read the relevant literature of English parentheses,including their definition,classification,functions and Translation strategies,and then consulted the relevant literature of Skopos theory.According to the difficulties encountered in translation practice,the author starts with the semantic and function of parentheses in sentences and analyzes specific cases,and summarizes four commonly used parentheses translation strategies,namely,cutting off long sentences;embedding;recasting;adding words,and strive to accurately convey the original text content and semantics.In addition,through this translation practice,the author can realize the combination of theory and practice,apply theoretical skills to specific sentences in combination with specific words and sentences,and summarize the problems encountered in practice to get translation strategies.The author hopes to provide some ideas for other translators by studying parenthetical translation.The accurate transmission of the original text will help draw attention to the issue of gender equality in the workplace.
