The theme of the Chinese immortal is a romantic one,expressing the ancient imagination of the world of the immortals and the desire to transcend life and death.The "wandering immortal" was born out of Chinese Taoism,and is an ideological concept or behavioural activity concerning immortality and attainment of immortality.The resulting artworks involve Chinese paintings,murals,prints,poems and novels.It also examines the representation of the fairy theme from the perspective of the creation of illustrated books and watercolours.The first chapter of this paper describes the origins of the topic,the current state of research and the research methodology.The second chapter analyses the concept of the fairy in a broad and narrow sense,describes its development history,ideological origins and modes of expression,attempts to define the concept and scope of the fairy theme,and discusses the representation of this theme in Chinese art history.Chapter Three classifies and outlines Chinese paintings with the theme of wandering immortals,and examines the representation of the theme of wandering immortals in Chinese painting in terms of painting language and narrative style,using specific works as examples.Chapter4 takes Ye Luying’s illustrated book,Luo Shen Fu,as an example,and examines the way in which the theme of the wandering immortal is represented in illustrated books,and uses it as a base to try to answer the question of how to inherit and develop the representation of traditional Chinese cultural themes in illustrated books.Chapter 5 takes Duan Hui’s watercolour paintings as an example,and examines the way in which the spirit of the wandering immortal is expressed in watercolour painting.The fairy has expressed the artistic imagination and religious philosophies of the Chinese on life and death and has accumulated a large number of artworks that deserve the attention of contemporary art creators and their inheritance and development.
