| China and Vietnam are neighboring nations that share common mountains and rivers,and have a long history of friendly exchanges.Vietnam was the first Southeast Asian nation to establish diplomatic relations with China.Since then,the two nations have maintained friendly exchanges;with economic and cultural exchanges becoming increasinginly active.Although the number of Vietnamese university students studying Chinese are increasing year on year,and a portion of those students have a good grasp of the Chinese language;there are still obstacles in practical communication.This is because students’ do have have a deep enough understanding of Chinese culture and are unable to understand Chinese people’s thinking and patterns and behavior habits.Hence,in the course of many years of teaching,the Chinese teaching departments of Vietnamese universities have continuously introduced classic passages from traditional Chinese literary works with the goal of developing the understanding of culture as the goal.This can increase foreign students’ understanding of Chinese culture and overcome barriers to communication.In this way,academic performance can be improved,and also has the added effects of increasing and promoting international Chinese language education.Among them,the masterpiece “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is the most popular.Choosing to use celebrated traditional Chinese literary works,and selecting classical passages to place into textbooks,can help to improve both Chinese cultural and language teaching;thereby increasing Vietnamese students’ recognition and understanding of Chinese culture.Therefore in Vietnam,the widely read “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” and interest in the novel,makes it an unparalleled choice for teachings materials,the vivid stories contained therein help in the localization of international Chinese language education and aids in its spread and acceptance.In teaching,language and education are complementary and inseparable,through studying passages in“Romance of the Three Kingdoms”,can increase Vietnamese students’ the depth of understanding Chinese cultural ideas,improve their cross-cultural communication skills,and effectively improve their Chinese learning effect.However,although Chinese teaching departments of Vietnamese universities include classical passages of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” in teaching of ancient Chinese literary works,the current state of its teaching result is unsatisfactory.According to interest theory,interest in learning is an important factor in determining outcomes.At the same time,this paper believes interest in learning is mainly affected by the content that is taught,the methods used for teaching,the teaching materials being used,and the instructor.Through a questionnaire survey we have found,Vietnamese university students’ interest in learning the classical passages of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”needs improvement.The main reasons are as follows: First,there is a disconnect between current teaching materials and teaching materials that students are interested in;many of the universities surveyed did not develop teaching materaisl according to students’ interests.Second,the current teaching methods are relatively simplistic,the teaching methods are not easy to understand,nor convenient or efficient;they do not convey the essence of language and culture,and do not meet the students’ expectations for being taught.Third,the teaching materials used to teach the classical passages of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” is not suitable.In the study,67.5% of students were dissatisfied or held a neutral attitude toward teaching materials,of those students;33.9% thought the content in the teaching materials were too difficult and 11.7% thought the contents were difficult to understand.Fourth is the ability of teachers.According to the study,33.5% of students felt that after listening to the teachers’ lectures on classical passages of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”,their interest in the subject did not increase,suggesting that teachers’ methods needs to be improved.As such,the models of teaching classical passages of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” need to be futher improved.To this end,this paper uses the classical passage that students are most interested in,“Heating Wine and Discussing Heroes,”as the theme,using the four following topics as guides to keep in mind: the theories of teaching,methods of teaching,textbook selection,and instructors;to design a typical teaching case.This paper also suggests a method to improve Vietnam’s current teaching models of classical passages from “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” seeks to increase the interest of classic passages “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” among Vietnamese university students,thereby improving academic results,and at the same time substantially improving the localization level of Chinese language education in Vietnam. |
