A Report On C-E Subtitle Translation In Assault Again （Excerpts） Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Nowadays,the export of Chinese TV series has become more and more popular.TV series,as a mass narrative medium,can not only convey a country’s cultural concepts and aesthetic tastes,but also help to build a national image.In this translation report,the source text comes from the subtitles of episodes 24-26 of the youth military TV series Assault Again,which premiered on CCTV 8（China Central Television 8）.The translated subtitles will be applied in the overseas version.As a special text,subtitles are the written form of characters’ lines.They must be synchronized with the scene.Therefore,subtitles are restricted by time and space.With the original features of subtitles,the source text’s specific features also bring challenges in translation.And this report will explore the characteristics of the source text at three levels.At lexical level,there are abundant military terms and metaphorical words;at syntactical level,there are ironic utterances in the form of rhetorical questions and long lines;at discourse level,there are multiple concurrent story lines and frequent scenario conversion.This translation report is under the guidance of Skopos theory.In Skopos theory,it is believed that translation is a kind of human action and such action is to achieve a certain purpose;and the translation methods are determined by the purposes of intended target text.In this translation practice,the purposes of the target text are quite clear.First,the translation requirements issued by the translation platform are regarded as the purpose while translating.And the final purpose is to make sure that the target audience can understand the plots with the subtitle and enjoy watching the TV series so that the TV series can gain popularity overseas and make cross-cultural exchanges.Therefore,based on the features of the source text and motivated by the purposes,under the framework of the three principles of Skopos theory,different translation methods are adopted at lexical,syntactical and discourse levels.At lexical level and under the Skopos rule,domestication is used for processing military terms unique in Chinese while explicitation for metaphorical words.At syntactical level and under the coherence rule,restructuring is applied to cope with long lines while ironic utterances in the form of rhetorical questions are turned into exclamations.At discourse level and under the fidelity rule,addition is applied to cope with frequent scenario conversions so that the plots are more consistent while keeping colloquialism consistency is used to process multiple concurrent story lines.Skopos theory provides the translator with guidance when encountering translation problems,which proves the feasibility of applying Skopos theory to this type of text.At the same time,it is also hoped that this practice report can provide a reference for the same kind of text,so as to make a contribution to improving the quality of subtitle translation of military TV series.
