The Translation Of Subtitles In American Television Series Person Of Interest From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Watching more good foreign films and television works through the Internet andother media, Chinese people can enhance understanding of the world, especially theUS, and this can also enhance cultural exchanges. In the introduction of Americanfilms and television works, subtitle translation plays an important role. Althoughtranslation studies have experienced decades of development, a specific theory for thefilm and television subtitle translation has not yet been formed.After doing research on relevant literature, the author found that among variouskinds of theories, the skopos theory can be used as theoretical guidance for TV seriessubtitles translation. This paper attempts to take the currently broadcasting TV series"Person of Interest" as an example, analyze the subtitle translation from theperspective of skopos theory, discuss how the theory guide subtitle translation, andhopes that the study can bring some inspiration in the field of subtitle translation.The thesis consists of the following parts. First, there is an introduction of theresearch background and the significance of the study. The body includes threechapters. The first chapter presents the basic background, as well as relevant conceptsof skopos theory. The second chapter generalizes how to apply skopos theory insubtitle translation. And the third chapter is a case study setting forth the translationstrategies in the guidance of skopos theory. The last part is the conclusion which sumsup the contribution of the thesis, the limitations and suggestions for researchdirections in future subtitle translation.
