| Chinese films and TV series have been selling successfully worldwide in recent years,and the market need for English subtitle translation has increased.Although many scholars are interested in subtitle translation of films and TV series,few military TV series have been targeted.This report is based on the subtitle translation project of the TV series,Assault Again,undertaken by the translator during the graduate period.The translator performs a study on the subtitle translation of military-themed TV series using Communicative Translation Theory as a guide.Assault Again is a military-themed TV series jointly produced by China Central Television and Yunwen(Beijing)Film Investment Co.,Ltd.It primarily relates the story of a group of young recruits who arrived on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau after undergoing rigorous training and overcoming numerous obstacles to become plateau soldiers.Through subtitle translation,the translator intends to boost the influence of Assault Again,develop a positive image of Chinese soldiers,and accomplish the purpose of cross-cultural communication.This report outlines the background of the project,the requirements of the client and the significance of the project.Then,it discusses how to prepare for translation,how translation progresses,and how to revise after translation.Moreover,the report puts forward the solutions to the problems encountered during the translation process.Communication Translation Theory,a theory developed by British translator Peter Newmark,is the theoretical basis of this report.Comprehension and feelings of target language readers are at the heart of Communicative Translation Theory.A translator should take into account the target audience’s emotions and the communicative context.After an in-depth study of Communicative Translation Theory,the translator applies three translation principles in translating: the principle of comprehensibility,the principle of economy,and the principle of equivalent effect.Based on the analysis and summary of military-themed TV series,guided by the principle of comprehensibility,the translator adopts the corresponding translation method for military terms,paraphrase for colloquial words and addition for non-subject sentences.Guided by the principle of economy,the translator employs the method of condensation for repetitive expressions and combination for split sentences.Guided by the principle of equivalent effect,the translator punctuates non-verbal information to strengthen the emotion and rearranges lines.As a final goal,this report aims to produce easy-to-understand and fluent translation,ensuring that the audience in the target languages can understand the content of TV series and have the same viewing experience as the audience in the source language.Through the translation of Assault Again from Chinese to English,the translator reveals guiding implications of Communicative Translation Theory to the military theme of subtitle translation.This report is presented with the hope that some insights into the future of military-themed subtitle translation can be gained from it.At the same time,the translator anticipates that Chinese military films and TV series can be exported,bolstering China’s modern cultural soft power. |
