An E-C Translation Report On Diabetes In Children And Adolescents （Excerpts） Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

Diabetes in Children and Adolescents is a medical monograph about the diagnosis and treatmentment of diabetes,written by William V.Tamborlane,a professor of pediatrics at Yale University.This book elaborates on the pathogenesis,clinical manifestations,and treatment of diabetes,which provides references for academic and clinical research of pediatric endocrinology to a certain extent.The translator was commissioned by a medical graduate student of Chongqing Medical University to provide the translation for his team,hoping to supply the Chinese material for their researches on pediatric diabetes.From the perspective of vocabulary and sentence,the source text mainly has the following characteristics.（1）.There are a large number of medical terminologies,which mainly include many derivatives from Greek and Latin,medical amphibious words,and diabetes-related abbreviations.（2）.There are many complex sentences,which include sentences with attributive clause,sentences characterized by passive voice,and sentences featured by complex components.According to the characteristics of the source text and the realization of the translation purpose,this translation practice takes Skopos Theory as the guiding theory.From the perspective of Skopos Theory,under the guidance of skopos rule,literal translation is adopted to translate derivatives from Greek and Latin,and adaptation is used to deal with amphibious words.Under the guidance of coherence rule,addition,repetition,reconstruction,and annotation are adopted to deal with sentences featured by complex components,and repetition,addition,and division are taken to deal with sentences with attributive clause.Under the guidance of fidelity rule,the translation methods for diabetes-related abbreviations are zero translation,disambiguation,omission,and addition,and the main translation method for sentences characterized by passive voice is conversion.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,different translation methods are adopted to deal with the problems of relevant characteristics of the source text,and this translation report is expected to provide some references on translation methods for translators who will translate the same type of medical texts in the future.At the same time,the feedback of the client in turn has washback effect on the translation accuracy of the translator,and the translator hopes that the translator in the future can comprehensively analyze the features of the source text and attach importance to the interaction and communication with the client.
