A Report On E-C Translation Of A Jury Of Her Peers （Excerpts）

This translation of two chapters excerpted from A JURY OF HER PEERS,belongs to the translation task of research project NO.SCWY13-21 of Sichuan Foreign Language Literature Research Centre,which are “The Depressing selves imagines of Women—Review the Literature Characters of Crazy Women ”.The target readers of this target text consist of academic scholars and general readers.The aim of this research project is to introduce ethical criticism to China.And the intention of this translation practice is to provide more reference material of feminist research for academic society,and to propagate feminist criticism among female readers to awake their feminist consciousness.From the perspective of social-culture,this translation project also has the significance to promote Chinese readers to know more about American women literature history,and boost cultural exchanges between China and US.In addition,through this practice,more experiences for feminist criticism translation will be explored for translation going forward.Skopos theory is adopted as guiding theory for this translation practice,which holds that the target of translation action as well as its strategies are determined by the demands of target recipients or the functions of translatum in the target communication situation.According to skopos theory,there are three main rules which should be followed,they are skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.To reach the skopos of adequate translatum results,feminist translation theory and textual coherence theory are used as supplementary theory.In this practice,textual coherence translation strategies including consistent translation of terms,adjusting sentence structure,using idioms to rewrite ST in target language etc,are adopted to meet requirements of coherence rule,while feminist translation strategies such as supplementing,footnoting and prefacing,hijacking translation etc.,are adopted to meet requirements of skopos rule and fidelity rule.In fact all translation strategies used here are targeted to meet translation skopos.Integral process has been designed for the translation,which includes preparation stage,translation stage,review and revision stage.With the support of parallel texts,the quality of translation has been improved continuously.
