| Feminist translation emerged in Canada in the early 1980 s,aiming to resist sexism in language, reconstruct female discourse and emphasize the translator’s subjectivity through translation studies and translation practices.Skopos Theory is the core theory of the German functionalist translation school. It advocates that translation is a purposeful human action, and the purpose of translation determines the process and final effect of translation.Skopos Theory can explain feminist translation from both theoretical and practical levels.Zhu Hong is the first generation of feminist literary critics in China and concentrates on translating Chinese contemporary women’s literature to the English-Speaking world, with her two representative translation anthologies A Frolic in the Snow and The Serenity of Whiteness.Zhu Hong compiles 54 works by 25 contemporary Chinese female writers in these two translation anthologies. There are 22 texts translated by Zhu Hong in these two translation anthologies. In this context, the thesis refers to the previous studies on feminist translation,Skopos Theory and Zhu Hong’s translation, takes examples from A Frolic in the Snow and The Serenity of Whiteness, and attempts to study Zhu Hong’s feminist translation strategies from the perspective of Skopos Theory. The thesis has two research purposes:(1)to discuss which feminist translation strategies Zhu Hong adopts and which of these feminist translation strategies she frequently uses;(2)to illustrate Zhu Hong’s feminist translation strategies from the perspective of Skopos Theory. The thesis first identifies and classifies the feminist translation strategies adopted by Zhu Hong in A Frolic in the Snow and The Serenity of Whiteness, and counts the frequency of each strategy. On this basis, the thesis analyzes Zhu Hong’s feminist translation strategies from the perspective of Skopos Theory. After analyses,it is found that Zhu Hong’s feminist translation strategies include supplementing, altering, omitting, interpreting, and hijacking, among which supplementing and altering are her most frequently-used feminist translation strategies. The thesis subsequently illustrates the feminist translation strategies adopted by Zhu Hong from the perspective of Skopos Theory. From the perspective of the skopos rule, the purpose of Zhu Hong’s translation can be divided into expressing women’s experience and changing the words with sexism.Feminist strategies for expressing women’s experience includesupplementing, altering and interpreting.Feminist strategies for removing the words with sexism include omitting and hijacking. From the perspective of coherence rule,Zhu Hong mainly adopts supplementing to complement conjunctive elements between sentences, thus strengthens the intra-textual coherence of the target text.As a result, readers can better understand the content, background, and development of women’s experience. From the perspective of the fidelity rule,Zhu Hong mainly uses supplementing, altering and interpreting to make the target text faithful to the content of the source text, but seldom uses omission and hijacking to change the content of the source text. The present thesis hopes to have theoretical and practical implications for the domestic studies on feminist translation strategies, especially those on Zhu Hong’s feminist translation strategies. |
