Reading is one of the five basic skills in English learning.Reading teaching plays a significant role in English teaching and it is the base of cultivating students’ comprehensive English ability.This makes us have to pay attention to the cultivation of students’ reading ability.However,in today’s high school English reading class,teachers still instill language knowledge in one direction and ignore the text content;ignoring the guidance of students’ reading strategies;ignoring the cooperation and interaction between students.This teaching mode reduces students’ interest in reading and leads them to be in a passive learning state.Therefore,teachers urgently need to find a more effective teaching method.Theme-based CBI is one of the most widely used models in CBI teaching philosophy.It is themed and student-centered,advocates independent and cooperative learning,and advocates the combination of language learning and content learning.This study applies the theme-based CBI teaching method to English reading teaching in senior high school,takes cooperative learning group as the classroom organization form,discusses the effect of this mode on English reading teaching,analyzes and sums up the instructive value to English reading teaching.The purpose of this study is to explore the following two questions:1.Can the application of theme-based CBI combined with cooperative learning in English reading teaching improve students’ reading achievement?2.Can the application of theme-based CBI combined with cooperative learning in English reading teaching stimulate students’ reading interest?In this study,108 students from two classes of a senior high school in Suzhou were selected as the research subjects.And the author conducted a semester-long experimental study.Class 5 was the control group and class 6 was the experimental group.The author adopted the theme-based CBI and cooperative learning teaching mode in experimental group,while the control group still used the traditional reading teaching mode.Using questionnaires,tests and interviews as research instruments,pre-test and post-test of reading were carried out for class 5 and class 6,questionnaires were carried out for the experimental group before and after the experiment,and interviews were conducted with the teachers and some students of the experimental group.SPSS 17.0was used to analyze the data collected after the experiment.It turns out that the combination of theme-based CBI and cooperative learning can effectively improve students’ reading performance in high school English reading teaching.In addition,students’ interest in reading has been greatly improved in the process of using this model in English learning.The classroom organization of cooperative learning can help to improve the present situation of English reading teaching in senior high schools,and students’ participation in the classroom has increased.Therefore,the author believes that the theme-based CBI combining cooperative learning can be effectively applied to English reading classes.This study has great implications for English reading teaching.Reading teaching should pay attention to the combination of language and content to improve students’ language skills.In classroom teaching,we should focus on students’ interest and motivation,advocate cooperative learning and improve students’ communicative level.At the same time,teachers should select meaningful reading materials related to the theme theme to expand students’ reading quantity.At the end of the paper,the author also points out the shortcomings of the research and the prospect of the future research.The author will continue to actively explore the application of this model in teaching,so as to continuously improve it,and also hopes that more scholars will explore rich educational methods to promote the better development of English teaching.
