Reading ability is important in English learning and occupies a large proportion.English reading ability,to a certain extent,reflects English language proficiency of English learners,and it also has a great influence on their English performance.However,the current middle school English reading teaching still mainly sees the teacher as the main body of a class,with the explanation of words and grammars as the main content,instead of regarding reading as part of the learning process where students can actively construct knowledge and develop abilities.English reading teaching in senior high schools urgently needs new teaching methods for reform and innovation,so the cooperative learning method has become the focus of attention.In order to change the current status of English reading teaching in senior high schools,this research will take cooperative and inquiry methods as benchmarks.Based on the relevant theoretical knowledge of cooperative learning and reading teaching,a cooperative learning reading teaching method will be applied in teaching English reading,and the effects of this combination,including students’ reading scores,reading interests,reading speed,abilities in acquiring the meanings of new words and what learning method they will choose in the following learning process,will be tested through reading tests and questionnaires.In this study,the Senior 2 Class B is selected as the experimental class,with a total of 65 students;the Senior 2 Class A is selected as the control class,with a total of 63 students.The grades of the students in the two classes are basically the same,and the learning levels are roughly equal.The control class uses a bottom-up teaching method,while the experimental class applies a cooperative learning teaching method.Through the test results of the experimental class and the control class,it can be seen that cooperative learning can improve students’ English reading scores,especially the less advanced ones,and narrow the score gap between the learners in the same class;through the results of the questionnaires,it can be seen that cooperative learning is beneficial to stimulate students’ interest in English reading,improve their reading speed,help students improve their habits in acquiring the meanings of new words,and motivate them to actively participate in cooperative learning activities.
