| In the current English college entrance examination, the total score of reading accounts for 60% of the whole test paper, and English reading ability has become the key to obtaining high scores in the English college entrance examination. Therefore,English reading teaching has become the focus of English teaching. However, from the current situation of high school teaching in Xinjiang, the size of each class is relatively large, and students’ English reading levels are uneven. The overall teaching model of the whole class does not play a significant role in improving students’ reading ability. In response to this problem,on the basis of previous researches, this paper tries to apply the stratified teaching to the English reading teaching of two parallel classes in a key high school in Urumqi,Xinjiang. The authors raised three research questions.First of all, what is the current situation of English reading in senior high school;second, what is the impact of the stratified teaching model on the students’ reading performance in the experimental class;third, what is the impact of the stratified teaching model on students’ interest and motivation in English reading.Based on previous researches, the author made the following four aspects:stratification of students, goals, teaching, and homework.Based on the test before the experiment and the survey of students’ English reading attitude, the author divides the students in the experimental class into three levels: A,B and C.and arranges students of different levels into different groups to carry out stratified teaching activities. But considering the respect of students’ self-esteem,the author adopts an implicit stratified teaching model.Aiming at the improvement of students’ reading scores and reading motivation, the author conducts research through questionnaires, tests and interviews before and after the experiment. The results of this study showed that(1)Current high school English reading instruction ignores individual diversity among students, which leads to differences in students’ reading scores and reading motivation in the same class;(2)The stratified teaching model can help students at all levels improve their reading scores;(3)The stratified teaching model can improve high school students’ motivation in English reading, and enhance their self-confidence.Therefore,stratified reading teaching has a positive impact on students’ reading interest, habits, strategies, and reading scores. |
