In 2020,people across the world suffered from the outbreak of Covid-19,the impact of which can be felt in economies and societies for decades to come.Under such conditions, the Food and Drug Administration of the United States co-hosted a press conference with Pfizer and Bio NTech in June 2020 to report the latest progress on the vaccine. The material in this report is an official document released at the meeting. As a scientific and technical text, the Document is characterized by multiple medical terms, nominalized structures, and most importantly, long sentences with layers of grammatical structures, which posed a great challenge to the author in practice. Therefore, how to translate long sentences in scientific and technical texts is mainly analyzed in this report.Long sentences account for 70% in the Document and can be roughly classified into three types, including long sentences with impersonal subjects, long sentences with passive voice, and long and complex sentences. For long sentences with impersonal subjects,it is advisable to covert the word class, omit the expletives and repetitive contents and specify abstract expressions. For long sentences with passive voice,it is not a bad idea to shift the voice, translate into Chinese passive voice and translate into conditional sentences. For long and complex sentences, amplification, separation and negation are adopted.Based on in-depth analysis,it is found that sometimes long sentences with passive voice can be translated into conditional sentences.Besides, several long sentences with passive voice can also be long sentences with impersonal subjects. Moreover, people can study long sentences from lexical level in the future. |
