The Public Expression Of Private Discourse: A Study On The Narrative Levels Of First-Person Documentary Films ——Take "Siyu’s Diary" As An Example

Since the 1990 s,first-person documentaries have been formally defined by researchers as an independent documentary genre.The academic community has gradually deepened the research on first-person documentaries.The popularity of camera equipment and the rise of personalized expression thoughts in the new century have all contributed to The development and research of first-person documentaries provide favorable soil.This article takes the narrative level of first-person documentaries as the research object,combs the development history of first-person documentaries and the relationship between authors,narrators and characters,and starts from the narrative levels of these three,combined with the personal work "Siyu’s Diary" "And other first-person documentaries.The story,discourse,and narrative layers of first-person documentaries are studied separately,and the characteristics of first-person documentaries in terms of topic selection,discourse expression,and planning and editing are deeply excavated and summarized.Finally,he focused on his personal work "Siyu’s Diary",explaining its unique characteristics as a first-person documentary.This article is divided into six parts.The first part explains the background of research and topic selection;the second part summarizes the development and classification of first-person documentaries,and divides the narrative level of first-person documentaries into extradiegetic level,diegetic level and metadiegetic level on the basis of clarifying the author,narrator,and central character.The third part analyzes the topic selection and character performance characteristics of the first-person documentary from the perspective of the metadiegetic level;the fourth part is based on Gérard Genette’s narrative perspective theory,and studies its narrative methods and characteristics;the fifth part Explains the director’s important role in structuring the film in the pursuit of social significance in the first-person documentary;the last part further reflects on the practice of personal works based on the research results.
