| Covid-19 pandemic is one of the most daunting challenges confronting the world today. On this occasion, top educators in the United States and China were invited to "US-China Non-governmental Public Forum Series on International Collaboration in an Era of Pandemic",which was hosted by Sino-American Educational Research Association. The reporter selected three sessions successively held from Sept.12 to 26,2020 to conduct a simulated E-C consecutive interpretation. These three sessions highlighted the issue of distance education, aiming to promote educational communication between China and the U.S.,further the development of distance learning and address some challenges to educational equality.During this project, the reporter came across four major interpreting problems: insufficient knowledge of pedagogical terminology;overemphasis on the literal meaning;failure to transfer the meaning of cultural-loaded words;logical error and information loss in interpreting long sentences. After the reporter reflected the cause of the problems, she transcribed the recording and analyzed the original interpreting materials.Guided by the Interpretive Theory and the Functional Equivalence Theory, this report provides four corresponding solutions: gaining linguistic knowledge of pedagogical terminology;utilizing the Triangle Model for sense equivalence;managing cross-cultural differences by functional equivalence;honing interpreting skills in interpreting long sentence.Based on the reporter’s personal experience, previous studies on the two theories and authentic interpreting materials, this report offers useful reference and assistance for future interpreters who are going to be engaged in interpreting online educational forums.Furthermore, the report presents solutions and suggestions for research and practice in interpreting sessions related to Sino-American communication in distance education. |
