In teaching Chinese as a foreign language, the teaching of Chinese characters is an important part, but also a difficult problem in the teaching process. In this paper, one of the most popular textbooks,Developing Chinese Intermediate Comprehensive I(Second Edition),is taken as the research object.Firstly,it is considered from its character size and the scope of character selection, and compared with the Table of General Standard Chinese Characters and the Outline of Level Vocabulary and Grade of Chinese Characters.Secondly,a statistical classification is made for the collected Chinese characters and its characteristics are studied. Then from the aspect of word formation, the Chinese characters used in the book are classified and counted. Finally, the teaching principles and methods of Chinese characters and the suggestions on the compilation of textbooks are obtained. The main body of this paper is divided into six parts: the introduction includes the purpose and significance of the research, the research object and the introduction of the textbook,as well as the literature review and research methods.Chapter 2 compares the1225 Chinese characters selected in the textbook with Outline of Level Vocabulary and Grade of Chinese Characters and Table of General Standard Chinese Characters, and finds that the majority of characters belong to Grade A characters and Grade B characters, and 1220 characters belong to Grade I characters, only 5 characters belong to Grade II characters, and zero characters belong to Grade III characters. In Chapter 3,from the perspective of whether the characters are formed or not and whether the characters can be continued to be split, through comparison,it is found that the basic parts are in the majority and the ability of constructing characters is strong, followed by the non-forming parts, which is second only to the basic parts in the text.Chapter 4starts with the analysis of the structure types of traditional Chinese characters, and finds that the majority of pictophonetic characters are selected in the text, followed by associative characters and pictographic characters, and the least number of indicative characters.Chapter 5 puts forward some suggestions: the teaching of Chinese characters should follow the principles of practicality, combination of form, sound and meaning and gradual progress; In the compilation of textbooks, teaching objects should be located accurately, teaching purposes should be set up pertinently, content of texts should be optimized, and the number of Chinese characters should be arranged scientifically and so on.The conclusion part gives an overall explanation of the paper and points out the shortcomings of the paper, such as the unreasonable statistical analysis and classification of the words used in the textbook.
