| This report examines the translation version of the popular science book The Human Cosmos:Civilization and The Stars（2020）written by Jo Marchant.At a time when China is advocating the initiative of "a community with a shared future for mankind",the concept of human-cosmos unity proposed in this book is in line with this Chinese philosophy.Taking the relationship between human beings and the cosmos as the theme,the book tells twelve important moments in history from the dual perspectives of humanity and science.This report aims to facilitate translation strategies for popular science texts,and thus further enriching research in the related field.The book features the way of semantic cohesion of punctuation.Since punctuation marks often take different semantic functions in English and Chinese,this report focuses on the semantic translation of three types of punctuation marks:dash,colon,and ellipsis.The semantic device of punctuation in this report is classified into six categories:enumeration,explanation,supplement,summation,reason,and transition.And three categories of combined semantic devices are proposed:respectively,reason with result,replacement with inference,and transition with equivalence.In addition,according to translation practice,the author also proposes the semantic device of emphasis that is not included in the theory,and divides it into the syntactic emphasis and the semantic emphasis which can be further extended to the combined semantics of emphasis with explanation.Based on Huang Guowen’s theory of logical connector,the report divides the methods of shift in punctuation marks into three aspects through case studies:respectively,retaining the original form,shifting with structural adjustment,and adding repetition and logical connectors.In general,the applicability of the proposed translation methods to punctuation in other texts can be useful on a limited scale due to the particularity of the source text and the countable number of analysis cases. |
