The research on human thinking and cognition has been always a hot topic in scientific community.The Rise of Homo Sapiens: The Evolution of Modern Thinking explicates the origins and evolution of modern thinking to the reader with plain language and many charts.Chinese punctuation marks have multiple functions and play an important role in a text.They are an indispensable part of the written language.On the basis of the translation of chapter Eight and Nine of The Rise of Homo Sapiens:The Evolution of Modern Thinking,this translation report mainly explores the application of Chinese punctuation marks in E-C translation to perform their separation,cohesion and rhetoric functions.In this report,six commonly used Chinese punctuation marks are applied and analyzed,including period,comma,colon,parentheses,semicolon and dash.The separation function of period and comma,the cohesion function of colon and parentheses,the rhetoric function of semicolon and dash are explored respectively.Then,the applications of punctuation marks are embodied in some typical examples,which shows that punctuation marks can function in a flexible way with the help of different translation methods and play a very important role in improving translation quality.This report consists of six chapters.The first chapter is an overview of this report.The second chapter introduces the language features of the original text and requirements on the translation task.The third chapter reviews the translation process.The fourth chapter analyzes the functions of the punctuation marks in Chinese.The fifth chapter gives some typical examples to show the application of punctuation marks in translation to perform these functions of separation,cohesion and rhetoric.Chapter Six summaries some ideas and lessons drawn from this translation practice as well as some deficiencies. |
