A Report On The Translation Of Popular Science Texts In Medicine Under The Guidance Of Semantic And Communication Translation Theories

In recent years,with the acceleration of globalization,the public has been increasingly interested in scientific knowledge.Popular science texts have easy-to-understand language and carry social education functions,which are popular among the public.High-quality medical popular science books are important carriers for the correct transmission of medical knowledge,and the domestic production of medical popular science books is still in development.Hence,the translation of medical popular science texts needs sufficient attention.Semantic and communication translation theories are two important translation theories proposed by Peter Newmark,a British translation theorist.Semantic translation theory stresses that the translation should be followed the structure and reproduced the style of the source text.Communication translation theory emphasizes that the translation should recreate the information of the original text and make the translation fluent and natural.The translation practice report is a selection of chapters from The Regeneration Promise:The Facts behind Stem Cell Therapies by Peter Hollands.There are many discrepancies between the English and Chinese languages.The translator tries to be guided by semantic translation theory to translate the word meanings faithfully;the translator tries to be guided by communication translation theory to enable the target language readers to acquire the same reading experience as the source language readers.Through many specific cases,the translator applies the semantic and communicative translation theories to the translation of terms,semi-terms,nominalized structures,long and complicated sentences,passive sentences,rhetorical sentences,and discourse coherence and cohesion by using translation techniques such as literal translation,conversion,notation,additional translation,split translation and reorganization,and analyzing the guiding role of semantic and communication translation theories at three levels:lexical,syntactic and discourse.This translation practice report indicates that semantic and communication translation theories are practical in translation practice,which can provide theoretical support for translating medical popular science texts.And it enriches the practical application of semantic and communication translation theories,and provides reference and research materials for translating medical popular science texts.
