A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of The Death Note Under The Guidance Of The Translation Variation Theory

This is a practice report on the translation of The Death Note under the guidance of the Translation Variation Theory,aiming to analyze translation problems during translation and introduce relevant solutions based on a better understanding of the source text.The source text that the translator translates and analyzes consists of seven parts involving different themes of horror stories.Therefore,the corresponding tone and style have been reflected in the translation.With plain and colloquial language,short story translation requires translators not to choose translation strategies arbitrarily,but to take into account the particularity of language,focus on the personalization of the characters,oral and cultural factors,etc.In this report,the translator analyzes the linguistic features and translation requirements of the short story material,explores difficulties and key points in the translation,and purveys Translation Variation Theory to solve them,which includes omission,narration,combination and rewriting.For the long words or sentences in the source text,the translator mostly adopts omission to reduce and merge the words and sentences with high repetition and overlapping meanings,so as to highlight the refining of the language.In addition,the translator also uses combinations to combine the same words or sentence patterns into one word to save unnecessary and tedious information in a few such difficulties.The translator also uses narration to solve the problem of cumbersome sentences and the urgent need to adjust the structure order of the original text,recombine and integrate the information fragments,and try to achieve elegant translation on the premise of keeping the faithfulness of the translation.Moreover,rewriting as a final theory of Translation Variation Theory,helps the translator based on the source text,fine-tuning the translation style,output in English writing habits,avoid the conflict of Chinglish,and more easily adjust the content and framework structure as a whole.In a word,the translator solves the difficulties,optimizes the structure of the original text and reduces the burden of readers by omission,narration,combination and rewriting.Through the translation,reflection and analysis of translation practice,the translator has learned more about Translation Variation Theory.At the same time,the translator has improved her translation skills,strengthened her understanding of the language style of short story,and summarized the general translation skills and methods of similar texts.
