Recently, public signs have been increasingly explored by international academic field. With the further expansion of research objects, topics, methods and other categories,it has gradually evolved into a special research field: Linguistic Landscape. However, current researches mainly focus on signs in commercial districts and ethnic minorities‘communities while few of them have noticed international exchange centers such as large sports venues with dual functions of hosting event and attracting tourists. In order to further enrich the research scholarship, this thesis takes a close look at the sports venues. On the basis of examining linguistic features of public signs, this present paper intends to provide suggestions on the regulation of texts on signs and to contemplate how the language landscape will play a vital role in improving Beijing‘s international language environment and its urban image.Taking linguistic landscape of public places in Beijing as the object for case study, this present paper mainly focuses on public signs around two major venues of Winter Olympic Games and supporting amenities around them. The picture samples and passers-by‘ attitudes have been recorded respectively by photographic documentation and conducting semi-structured interviews. In addition, the data will be collected, categorized and then transcribed step by step. Finally, findings will be provided under the three-dimensional analytical model, the framework initiatively applied in LL research by Trumper-Hecht with a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis. This thesis proposes to proffer a comprehensive description of the linguistic features, sign readers‘perceptions and motivation behind the construction of linguistic landscape from three dimensions: physical, experiential and political dimension.According to the observation,in terms of physical dimension: as for features in language ontology, the texts on signs for behavior regulation and cultural promotion show distinctive phonetic, semantic, grammatical and rhetoric features;as for features of language choice,Chinese is the preferred code written in standard format, which reflects the implementation of national language policies;additionally,Chinese-English bilingual signs account for the highest proportion among the multilingual signs covering a wide range of areas. In addition, the translation quality is relatively high, which indicates that the sign setters have fully taken into consideration the tendency internationalization of specific areas in the city and the needs of target readers;as for inscription and emplacement, the texts on signs are mostly in bold type and in white, black or blue color, which doesn‘t only fit in architectural style of the venues, but also enhances the authority and performative function of signs. In terms of political dimension: the language policies for standardizing public signs have been basically implemented in language practice while there are still many gaps between them;in addition,by reviewing findings from another two dimensions,it‘s examined that there are two purposes of linguistic landscaping: one is to strengthen the public‘s cultural identity towards Chinese language and characters and the other is to construct and present the image of Beijing as an international exchange center. In terms of experiential dimension, there are 6 factors affecting the public‘s perspectives towards public signs: meanings/functions,expressions,visual effects, quality of contents, performance characteristics and individual cognition. What‘s more, basically the interviewees‘ language attitudes are pretty mature and rational, for they can make objective evaluations of Chinese and English against their language backgrounds and the current international situation.Their attitudes towards these two languages on signs are dissenting in terms of the dimension of cognition, emotion and behavior tendency.
