A Report On The C-E Translation Of The Lingqu Canal(Chapter Ⅴ)

The source text(ST)of the C-E translation report is selected from the literary work The Lingqu Canal written by Huang Jishu,a writer from Guangxi.The translator selects the fifth chapter for the translation practice,with about 15,000 words.This chapter mainly narrates the dangers and interesting events that Shi Lu,the hero in the novel,encountered on his way back to Lingnan.It not only portrays heroic characters,but also shows that Shi Lu and even the whole Chinese nation have a strong sense of mission and the spirit of inuring to hardships.The translation report is carried out under the guidance of Skopos theory,in which the Skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule are applied respectively.According to the different expression habits of English and Chinese,the translator tries to adopt different translation methods and strategies from the lexical and syntactic level to analyze the specific problems encountered in the process of translation,so as to make readers understand the ST and really taste the essences and charms of the work.The translation report is divided into five sections.The first section belongs to the description of the translation task,mainly including the introduction to the author and the background of the ST,as well as the significance of the translation task.The second section is the translation process,which is composed of pre-translation preparation,difficulties produced in the translation process and translation revision.The third section is the guiding theory,which mainly summarizes the origin and development of Skopos theory and systematically introduces its three rules.The fourth section presents the case analysis in the translation task,which is also the center of this report.Based on the three rules,the translator uses different translation methods and strategies to analyze the four-character phrases,culture-loaded words and terms at lexical level,as well as long and difficult sentences,dialogues and ancient classical Chinese at syntactic level.The fifth section is a summary to the translation report from the aspects of gains,limitations and suggestions.It can be considered that it is of benefit to readers to understand the special cultural connotation and spread Chinese culture better by faithfully conveying the characters’ emotions and making readers strike a responsive chord in emotion.
