Nowadays, with the development of international exchange, the communication between China and other countries has become an increasingly irresistible trend in the fields of politics, economy, culture, diplomatic, education and so on. China plays a vital part in the world stage, whose comprehensive strength has been enhanced in the past decades. To make China better known to the world and promote the international communication in the international community, we should attach importance to the translation of publicity materials. The aim of Chinese-English translation of publicity materials is to make sure the target readers can comprehend the information conveyed by source texts accurately. In order to achieve the aim, the translators or interpreters are required to take a variety of factors into consideration in the process of translation such as style of writing, logical structure, cultural background, and so on, to achieve the communicative function of inter-language. The essay is to explore the translation of the18th CPC National Congress, held on the8th November,2012under the perspective of Skopos Theory.Skopos is a Greek word meaning "aim" or "purpose", the theory was proposed by Hans Vermeer in the1970s, and is called functionalist theory. Skopos Theory focuses on the communicative function of the translated texts, which determines the strategies and methods applied in the course of translating so as to produce a functional equivalent consequence. The Skopo Theory enables the translators to use combined knowledge and experience as well as other factors to make use of different means to convey the information of the source text (ST). On the basis of translation principles,"faithfulness" or "fidelity","expressiveness" and "elegance", the translators should adjust strategies and methods:rewriting, addition, reproduction, omission or deletion, amplification, diction and analogy etc. As is known to scholars or translators, Skopos theory lays a solid ground for the translation practice. The thesis takes the edition of Chinese-English translation of the18th CPC National Congress for example and aims to perform a research in the view of Skopos Theory, hoping to shed light on how these translation strategies and methods can be used in the translation practice comprehensively. Meanwhile, the author takes some attempts to translate some sentences or passages and puts forward the author’s advice and insight. The thesis is grouped into five chapters as follows:Chapter â… is the research purpose and backgournd. Chapter â…¡ is the theoretical framework, making a brief comparision with other traditional translation theories and their translation principles. It lays sound theoretical grounds for the study of the thesis. Chapter â…¢ is aimed to the dimensions of the political text genres materials and its characteristics. Chapter â…£ is the core of the article. It is classified into three parts: the first part is about C-E (Chinese-English) traditional strategies and methods of political texts, the second part is the application of Skopos Theory in the translation of political texts apart from previous strategies or methods, other strategies or methods are employed, such as rewriting, addition, reproduction, omission or deletion, amplification, diction and analogy etc. The last part is the summary. Chapter V is the conclusion of the essay and points out the limitations of the thesis and gives the author’s advice about the strategies of translation. |
