A Study Of The English Translation Strategies Of Abbreviations In Government Work Reports From 2014 To 2018 From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

The Government Work Report of the State Council(hereinafter referred to as GWR)is an official document declared by the government of the People's Republic of China.It contains the latest policies of the country and has great significance for national development.Abbreviations,as a lexical category of Chinese characteristics,are frequently used in annual GWR.This thesis selects 2014-2018 Chinese versions of GWRs as the source text and their corresponding official English translations as the target text.It aims to study the proper translation strategies that can be applied to the abbreviation translation and their influence on the translation.This thesis is guided by the rules of Skopos Theory,which includes the skopos rule,the coherence rule,the fidelity rule as well as the loyalty principle.The domestication strategy and the foreignization strategy are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.This thesis aims to answer the following two questions:(1)What strategies can be applied to translate abbreviations properly in GWRs?(2)How do the translation strategies affect the abbreviation translations in GWRs?It is found that both the domestication and the foreignization strategies are mainly adopted in the abbreviation translations in the GWRs,with the application of the domestication strategy accounting for 58.1%,and the application of the foreignization strategy for 41.9%.It is also found that the domestication strategy tends to serve the readers of the target text and help them understand the translation with little hindrance,and the foreignization strategy focuses on the style of the original text and help preserve the Chinese characteristics culture and spread it to the target readers.According to the different attributes of translation strategies,after confirming the needs of abbreviation translations in GWRs,translators can choose proper translation strategy and method.Finally,the translation will be worked out.This study is of theoretical and practical significance.On the one hand,it can help foreign readers better understand the abbreviation translations in the GWRs anddeepen their understanding of language and cultural features of Chinese political essays,so that they can understand the policies easily and feel the charm of Chinese culture.On the other hand,it can draw more scholars' attention on this topic,so that the studies of the content and range of the GWR translation can be enriched and more experience will be provided for further study.
