A Practice Report On Mock Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting Of The Documentary But,There Are Still Books Under The Guidance Of The Interpretive Theory

With the rapid development of documentaries,many excellent ones have presented.These documentaries attract the attention of audiences.With the fast development of the economy,books have surpassed papery medium to electronic channel.People are reading books in a variety of ways.But,There are Still Books is one of these excellent documentaries.Two sets of But,There are Still Books ― “Designers’ Paper Kingdom” and “The Wonderful World of Picture Books” ― are selected to mock this consecutive interpreting.Most parts of this documentary are interviews and real-time dialogues which have a high degree of colloquialism.After the mock consecutive interpreting,the author found some difficulties,such as culture-loaded expressions,logic disorder,omission,repetition and redundancy,colloquial expressions,etc.The Interpretative Theory emphasizes that senses are vital elements in the interpreting process.To solve these translation problems,under the support of the Interpretative Theory,the interpreter analyzed problems and gave some tactics,such as free translation,amplification,omission,sentence reconstruction,de-verbalization,etc.So,we can take a fluent and natural translation to conform to the habits of Chinese expression.Through the study of theory and examples,the author has found: first,interpreters should use free translation to deal with the special cultural words in the target language in order to meet the needs of cultural exchange.Second,to guarantee the smooth delivery of the information and alleviate the audience’s burden of understanding the goal of cross-cultural communication,interpreters should compensate for the cultural defaults caused by the cultural differences.Third,interpreters should pay attention to the same meaning words in the source language,and merge key information by using translation strategies.Fourth,interpreters should pay attention to the implicit logical relations in the source language.After fully understanding the information contained in the source language,interpreters should shake off the linguistic constraints and adjust the structure in order to reflect the logical relations.This translation practice has deepened the author’s understanding of translation practice and improved practical ability.Meanwhile,interpreters should actively improve multitasking ability and translation efficiency to output more coherent and faithful interpretation and improve the quality of interpretation.This report is aiming to share the author’s experience in translation practice under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,hoping to provide a valuable reference for future documentary interpretation practice.
