A Report On C-E Translation Of A Local Record Of Guangxi:Ancient Villages And Towns (Excerpts)

The culture of ancient villages and towns in Guangxi is an important part of Chinese civilization and characteristic culture as well as an excellent crystallization of Guangxi’s magnificent landscape and historical humanities,which shows the unique cultural heritages of Guangxi ancestors’ production and life as well as traditional folk customs.The source text of this translation project includes Chapter One and Chapter Two selected from the book A Local Record of Guangxi: Ancient Villages and Towns compiled by Lv Ruirong.These two chapters give a detailed description of the distribution,changes and characteristic culture of ancient villages and towns in Guangxi.The culture of ancient villages and towns in Guangxi has a great value of research and translation.Therefore,the translator hopes that this translation task can promote the spread of "the culture of ancient villages and towns in Guangxi" to a certain extent,and at the same time provide a reference for the translation of such kind of texts in the future.The translator took Skopos Theory proposed by Vermeer as the theoretical guidance of this translation practice.After analyzing the language characteristics,key points and difficulties of the source text and understanding the differences between Chinese and foreign countries in realms of ways of thinking,language characteristics,the translator applied various translation methods such as division,annotation,and addition to make the translation more fluent,more natural and smoother on the basis of being faithful to the source text.This report includes five chapters.Chapter I consists of a description of the source text,the background and the significance of this translation task;Chapter II exhaustively narrates the translation process,which is split into three parts,including the preparations which contain the analysis of source text,the selection of references and the consultation with the author of the source text,difficult and key points met in the translation process and proofreading;Chapter III is a general introduction of the development of Skopos Theory,three major rules and the applications of Skopos Theory in C-E translation practices;Chapter IV is about how to achieve the rules of Skopos and fidelity from the translation at the lexical level,and analyzes how to embody the rule of coherence from the translation at the syntactical level under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Finally,Chapter V summarizes the gains and limitations of this translation practice as well as some suggestions.
