A Report On E-C Translation Of Sustainable Urban Development In The Age Of Climate Change(Excerpts)

The source text of this English-Chinese translation report is excerpted from the first two chapters of Sustainable Urban Development in the Age of Climate Change–People: the Cure or Curse,co-authored by Ali Cheshmehzangi and Ayotunde Dawodu.Emphasizing that people are key to mitigating climate change,this book explores the best practices for improving climate change and sustainable urban development,and highlights bottom-up approaches of implementing and achieving sustainable urban development in the age of climate change,focusing on the transmission of information.Therefore,it can be classified into informative text.Based on the text type,this material will be translated under the guidance of Newmark’s translation theory,and the translator adopts different translation methods in dealing with the differences in two languages,in order to make the translation conform to Chinese expressions.At the lexical level,in view of the proper nouns,technical words and non-technical words,translation methods such as conversion of word class,four-character phrase and specification are employed to ensure that the meaning is appropriately expressed.At the syntactic level,for the complex sentences and passive forms,strategies of inversion,division and change of voice are applied to accurately convey the information of the original text.At the textual level,considering language functions and context,structural addition and logical cohesion are conducted to ensure the cohesion and coherence of the translated text.Basing on the case analysis in this translation report,the translator summarized some translation strategies and methods related to the translation of informative texts,which can serve as a reference for translators working on similar texts.
