| Production-oriented approach(POA),a foreign language teaching method with Chinese characteristics, was officially proposed by professor Wen Qiufang and her research team in 2014.The teaching method aims to approach the long-standing “learning-using divide”problem that exists in foreign language teaching and learning in China. This research attempts to apply POA into vocational oral English teaching, aiming to comprehensively test the applicability and effectiveness of the teaching method. This research mainly explores the following two questions:1.What is the effect of POA on students’ foreign language anxiety?2.What is the effect of POA on students’ oral English performance? This research is conducted in a vocational college of Hubei province.Participants of this experimental teaching are 100 students from the two classes of preschool education major in this college. The experimental class is taught in POA,while the control class is taught in traditional Presentation,Practice,Product(PPP)method. The teaching experiment lasts for 16 weeks. The research collects multiple data, including oral tests, questionnaires, students’ interviews and teacher’s journals, and uses SPSS23.0 to analyze the quantitative data. The data results prove that the implementation of POA in vocational oral English class is feasible and effective.POA can effectively alleviate students’ foreign language anxiety and improve students’ oral English performance. In addition, students have positive comments on the teaching method. This research has the following implications: first, teachers should provide appropriate scaffolding to guide students to successfully complete output tasks and cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability;second,POA can be combined with flipped classroom model to ease the current situation of tight time and heavy tasks of English classes;third,if POA is to be widely used in foreign language teaching for a long time,it is necessary to establish a supporting curriculum system, compile matched textbooks, and create a teaching environment conducive to the implementation of POA. |
