| The English Curriculum Standards for Secondary Vocational Schools states clearly that English oral proficiency is one of the core qualities necessary for secondary vocational students.However,English teaching in secondary vocational schools puts too much emphasis on language input while neglects the output.The students pay no attention to oral English learning and they are unable to express themselves in oral English effectively.The Production-oriented Approach(POA)focuses on learning center,emphasizes learning-using integration,and has obvious guiding effect on students’ learning.This study applies POA to oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools,tries to explore the effects of POA on students’ oral English achievements,vocabulary,grammar,pronunciation,and interactivity in oral proficiency,and their attitudes toward oral English learning.In this study,a total of 82 students from two classes of first year Hospitality Management major in a vocational school were selected as the research participants.The oral English teaching experiment lasted for 15 weeks.In this experiment,Class One was randomly selected as the control class and Class Two as the experimental class.The regular 3P teaching model and POA were separately applied to oral English teaching.Through quantitative and qualitative research methods,the achievements of pre-and post-oral tests,the results of questionnaires and interview were collected and analyzed.The results show that the application of POA improved the students’ oral English achievements,and had a positive effect on the improvement of vocabulary,grammar and interactivity aspects of oral proficiency,but had no advantage in pronunciation.Meanwhile,their attitudes toward oral English learning has changed significantly.More students realized the importance of oral English learning,and became interested in it.The results of this study provide an empirical basis for the application of POA into oral English teaching in secondary vocational schools,and some teaching references for secondary vocational school English teachers.In view of the limitations of this study,the researcher also put forward some suggestions for future teaching and research. |
