| With the deepening of globalization,cross-border tourism has become common.China has attracted many foreign tourists due to its long history and profound cultural heritages. However, due to language barriers and substantial cultural differences, like values, aesthetics, history, traditions, mindsets, the communication between the tour guide and foreign tourists is usually not smooth. Therefore, guide interpreters play an essential role in cross-cultural communication. On the one hand, they translate one language to another. On the other hand, they translate one culture to another while keeping the balance between preserving the original culture and making the delivery easily understood by tourists.Tourism is also related to many other fields,so interpreters should know something about everything, including geography, economy and trade, literature, biology, transportation.Usually, interpreters need to walk with visitors. Then it is nearly impossible for them to sit down and take notes;thus reliable short-term memory and memory skills are necessary. In addition, unexpected things may happen, like the tour guide casually adjusts the schedule or changes the itinerary due to the bad weather. In this case, interpreters are supposed to adjust the feelings and make full use of the available resources to get prepared. This practical report is based on the author’s interpretation practice in the two exhibition halls of the Hunan Provincial Museum: the permanent exhibition Hunanese,Exhibition of Human History and Culture and the temporary exhibition From Renaissance to Impressionism,Five Hundred Years of European Painting. Before interpreting, the report describes the pre-task preparation for the themes and representative exhibits in the two halls,on top of which sorts out glossaries;summarizes the problems encountered during interpreting;collects feedback from the audience and self-evaluation after interpreting. With Newmark’s communicative translation theory as the framework, the paper analyzes typical cases and concludes that the practical interpreting strategies based on the practice include substitution, explanation, condensation, and restructuring, trying to find the balance point of cultural transformations between source language culture and target language culture, preserving the form and main information of the source language to a certain extent, and at the same time paying attention to communication, namely the understanding and response of the audience to ensure the effectiveness of information delivery. |
