Study On Chinese Verb Reduplication From The Perspective Of Language Subjectivity

As a grammatical means widely used in human language,reduplication is a common phenomenon which can almost appear at any level of the language system.As for Chinese,the research on verb reduplication mainly focuses on the form,scope,meaning and function.The use of online corpus and other advanced research tools has also made a significant contribution to the abundant results.It has been found that the basic meaning of verb reduplication is that the momentum is small and the time is short,which can serve to persuade,pacify emotion,and maintain personal image.Verb reduplication,however,is generally restrained by its meaning and emotional color.Inspired and based on the previous studies of verb reduplication from different angles,the present study tries to interpret verb reduplication from a novel perspective by taking subjective factors into consideration.Apart from summing up the previous research on verb reduplication,this thesis will also select a large number of language facts from the Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU(CCL)and fully elaborate on the subjective performance in Chinese verb reduplication.By comparing and analyzing the data,we will answer the following three questions: First,what are the types of Chinese verb reduplication that can express subjectivity? Second,how does Chinese verb reduplication express subjectivity? Third,why can Chinese verb reduplication express subjectivity?With a close look at and an in-depth analysis of the data,we come to the following conclusions.First,reduplication is an important means for speakers to express subjectivity,among which AA,ABAB and AABB are the most common types.Second,verb reduplication is a special expression used by the speaker in a specific context,which implies the speaker’s stance,attitude and feelings.The use of verb reduplication can express the additional meanings of trying and enhance the degree of euphemism,so as to achieve different pragmatic effects and achieve interpersonal harmony.This explains why Chinese verb reduplication is an important manifestation of the speaker’s subjectivity.Third,Chinese verb reduplication often contains three subjective signs in the discourse,namely the speaker’s perspective,the speaker’s affect and the speaker’s epistemic modality.This research can provide a new perspective and new method for the study of Chinese reduplication,especially verb reduplication,and has important practical significance in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and cross-cultural communication.
