This thesis probes into the syntax and semantic of the verb reduplication in modern Chinese. First of all, we classify the verbs according to their reduplication ability, and analyze their semantic features, then we grasp the grammatical meaning of verb reduplication. On this basis, we also investigate the phenomenon of verb reduplication with quantifier objects, with "BU" (不) and "MEI"(没),with time and with tense. The thesis includes seven chapters. In Chapter 1, the introduction consists in the objects the significance of the research, the range of argument, the approach of analyzing and the resource of the corpora’s source. In addition, we summarize some relevant theoretical problems. In Chapter 2, we classify the verbs of "verb usage dictionary" into three categories, then analyze the semantic features of these verbs." autonomy" and "quantity" are two key elements for verbs’ reduplication ability. In Chapter 3, we analyze the character of verb reduplication and observe the change produced by verb reduplication. We found that the primary grammatical meaning of verb reduplication is that the "quantity" of the verb be weakened. In Chapter 4, we explain the phenomenon that the verb reduplication can be followed by non-quantity objects, but can’t be followed by quantity objects. The reason for this phenomenon is that verb reduplication exclude the "specific degree and result" on the aspect of semantic. In Chapter 5, we discuss the relationship between verb reduplication and negative words "BU"(不)and "MEI"(没).The verb reduplication indicates an action has happened in fact, or be expected to happen, and therefore can not be negated. But the verb reduplication can combine with "Bu" and "Mei" in virtual sentence, because the deep semantic of the fixed structure consists of negative words and the rhetorical mood is coincident with the semantic of the verb reduplication. In Chapter 6, we explain the phenomenon of the verb reduplication can combine with "LE"(了),but not with "ZHE"(着)and "GUO(过)". Finally, we analyze the restraining relationship when verb reduplication together with the time adverbs including "LIJI"(立即)、"MASHANG"(马上)、"HURAN"(忽然)、"JIANG"(将)、"JIJIANG"(即将)、"CENGJING"(曾经)、"YIJING"(已经)The seventh chapter is conclusion.
