Picture books are suitable materials for the language knowledge,background knowledge,text structure,presentation form and other phonemes in the reading materials to meet the students’ overall cognitive development level and language development level.Compared with English textbooks,the amount of reading provided by English textbooks is limited,and the real reading ability cannot be cultivated through classroom teaching.Students need to supplement the needs of cognitive development,language development level,subject matter and genre rich in different stages.Reading materials,especially under the guidance of teachers,should be able to gradually develop various reading strategies and develop good reading habits in order to meet the "Experimental Draft of the English Curriculum Standard for General Senior Middle Schools in Full-time Compulsory Education"(Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China)2001)(hereinafter referred to as the "standard")in terms of English reading content and English reading ability.In this context,this article studies the strategies for improving the reading ability of English picture books in primary schools.Using literature data method,classroom observation method,questionnaire survey method,interview method,case analysis and other methods to conduct research,investigate and analyze the establishment of picture book courses in Chongqing S Primary School,and investigate and evaluate the effect of picture books on improving pupils’ English reading ability And the existing shortcomings,and then put forward the strategies of primary school English picture book reading courses to improve primary school students’ English reading ability.The research content of this article is mainly divided into the following parts:Chapter 1 is an overview,clarifying the concept of primary school English picture books,clarifying the characteristics and classification of primary school English picture books,and defining the concept of primary school English reading ability.Chapter 2 is the feasibility analysis of English picture book reading teaching for primary school students,mainly from the aspects of goals,approaches,methods,organization and social recognition,so as to show that it is feasible for English picture book reading teaching to improve primary school students’ English reading ability.Chapter 3 elaborates the principles of English picture book teaching in primary schools based on the whole language teaching theory,which are the overall principle,the principle of natural expression,the principle of immersion and the principle of respect and trust.Chapter 4 is the construction of the teaching strategy framework for improving the reading ability of English picture books in primary schools.Based on the analysis of the feasibility of reading teaching in English picture books in primary schools,the story teaching mode is used to teach English picture books in primary schools.Therefore,the use of English picture books for primary school English reading teaching is not only "usable" but also easy to use,thus constructing a teaching strategy framework for the teaching of pupils’ English picture book reading ability improvement.Chapter 5 proposes the design and implementation of the teaching experiment of English picture book reading in primary schools.Combining with the development of English picture book reading teaching in S elementary school,the design of implementation plan,survey tools and survey objects are proposed.Chapter 6 investigates the experimental implementation of the picture book reading course,using classroom observations and interviews to analyze the effectiveness and problems of the implementation.Through investigations,problems in the implementation of English picture book reading teaching have been found.The main problems are: teachers’ inadequate understanding of the concept of reading literacy;unclear picture book reading teaching objectives;lack of teaching methods;lack of picture book reading materials;lack of effective reading evaluation.Chapter 7 puts forward the strategies for improving pupils’ English reading ability in picture books based on the experimental implementation of the English picture book reading course.From the cultivation of reading ability,the establishment of a diversified teaching evaluation mechanism,and the provision of adequate English picture book reading resources,the corresponding strategies are put forward.Measures to promote the development of primary school English picture book reading courses can better cultivate students’ reading ability.
