This report is based on a mock SI task in the case of the Global MOOC Conference on Learning Revolution and Higher Education Reform jointly hosted by Tsinghua University and UNESCO Institute of Educational Information Technology from December 9 to 11 in 2020.During the three days, the practitioner provided simultaneous interpretation with text online in a dummy booth.Access to text can be helpful in SI task, but interpreters are affected by many factors, resulting in unbalanced energy distribution and poor SI quality. This report explored the factors affecting SI quality in English-Chinese SI with text, and came up with some coping strategies based on the practitioner’s real SI experience. With Daniel Gile’s Effort Model as a theoretical framework, this report explained the visual, audio and procedural causes of imbalanced effort distribution in the SI performance.Three typical problems affecting the quality of SI were illustrated and analyzed in this report, namely, loss of information, disfluency and broken sentences.Based on the practitioner’s performance, this report proposed three strategies to cope with the above problems and improve the SI quality: simplification, segmentation and repetition. These strategies are expected to be of some help to SI trainers and trainees.
