On The Translation Of Long Sentences In Scientific Text Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

The source text Weather & Climate Services for the Energy Industry is a highly specialized scientific reading.This book focuses on the impact of climate phenomena on natural energy such as wind energy and water energy.The translator chose chapters 5-8 of the book as translation practice materials,and fully realized that long sentences occupy a high proportion in this source text.Also,mixed with many jargons,different types of clauses and complex sentence structures,the translation of long sentences is the most difficult and critical point of project.Therefore,how to better solve this problem on both lexical and sentence level is the main point of this report.Communicative translation theory put forward by British translation theorist Peter Newmark is reader-centered,focusing on the effective transmission of information and readers' response.Communicative translation theory allows translator to explain the source text and adjust the target text in order to obtain the best effectiveness of translation.In this report,single sentence with more than 20 words is defined as a long sentences.And English long sentences are divided into four types according to their structures: simple long sentences,compound long sentences,complex long sentences and compound-complex long sentences.Based on this translation material,this report preliminarily explores the translation methods that can be used for translating compound long sentences,complex long sentences and compound-complex long sentences in scientific and technological texts.Synchronizing and recasting can be adopted to translating compound long sentences.For complex long sentences,methods of cutting,embedding,repetition and omission are applicable.Methods of transforming,inserting and integrating is useful while translating compound-complex long sentences.These methods prove the applicability of applying communicative translation theory to the translation of long sentences in scientific and technological texts.This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One gives a brief introduction to research background and source text of this translation project.Chapter Two tells the process of translation practice and three stages of it are preparation before translation,translation process and proofreading after translation,respectively.Chapter Three studies Newmark's communicative translation theory and the definition and classification of English long sentences.Chapter Four analyzes the practical application of translation strategies under the guidance of communicative translation theory in specific cases according to different types of long sentences.Chapter Five summarizes major findings and limitations of this translation practice.
