A Report On The Translation Of Scientific And Technical Texts Under The Text Analysis Model Of Nord

As early as 1980 s,Deng Xiaoping,one of the great leaders of China,once said that science and technology are the first productive forces.In the modern times,science and technology are not only symbols of modern society,but have been important forces for the development and progress of human society.Especially under the background of economic globalization,the cooperation and communication between countries and regions become even more frequent,which propel and promote the development of translation industries in the science and technology field.Annual Energy Outlook 2016(AEO 2016)was issued on the official website of the US Energy Information Agency in the August,2016.Its main contents are the analysis and prediction of the factors influencing the world energy market,and it consists of the following five sections: executive summary,legislation and regulations,issues in focus,market trends,comparison with other projections.The comparison with other projections part is selected for this report,which is a comparison of the price and demand of economic growth,oil prices,total energy consumption,natural gas,petroleum and other liquid fuels and coal predicted by the US Congressional Budget Office(CBO)and Social Security and Administration(SSA)as well as other organizations.This report adopted the functional approaches to translation studies of Germany,which was in embryonic stage in the book Possibilities and limitations of Translation Criticism by professor Katharina Reiss at the beginning of 1970 s.The book Text analysis in translation: theory,method and application by Christaine Nord offered us a new perspective for translation studies and practice.The material for this translation practice is selected from AEO 2016.Firstly,the task for the translation text is described,and the analysis of translation brief and source text is carried out under the guidance of text analysis model of Nord.Then the feature of the source text is summarized from three levels: vocabulary,sentence and discourse.The translation quality plan is formulated,and the translation strategies are illustrated from the above three levels at last.Inspirations are gained through this practice on translation: firstly,the analysis of translation brief and source text plays a significant role in the guidance of choosing translation strategy;secondly,the translation of scientific and technical text is a purposeful activity,and the text analysis model provides a theoretical framework for the translation of scientific and technical texts for the translaton;thirdly,the looping model of translation need to be deeply understood,“every knowledge gained in the course of analysis and comprehension may be confirmed or corrected by later findings”(Christiane Nord,2001: 38),thus confirmation and correction of the target text are needed at any time.Due to the limitations of many factors,the target text might have room for further improvement,the corpus for this translation practice might not large enough and translation strategies might remain to be tested in other technical texts.But the target text may provide relatively new information for the people who are not familiar with English in China,and the application of text analysis model of Nord in the scientific and technical texts may lay the foundation for further study in this field.
